Blades Maintain Perfect Pre-Season Record in Chesterfield Victory
Sheffield United made it four wins from four in pre-season as over 3,000 travelling Blades fans witnessed further signs of progress under Rubén Sellés.
Saturday’s friendly at Chesterfield saw Aston Villa loanee Barry make his first appearance in a Blades shirt—and it didn’t take him long to make an impression.
The first real action came when Ahmedhodžić made a key intervention to stop Bonis from getting a shot away. Almost immediately, United countered with pace. Barry beat his marker and squared the ball for Cáceres, who finished clinically from close range just four minutes in.
Cáceres was involved again moments later, chipping a clever pass over the defence for Cannon, whose shot was well saved by goalkeeper Hemming. But United soon had their second—once again thanks to Barry, who timed his delivery perfectly for Ukaki to slot home a finish reminiscent of Cáceres’s opener.
Although Chesterfield enjoyed a few periods of possession, it was United who struck again on 32 minutes. Hamer’s inswinging free-kick was met by Ahmedhodžić, who beat the goalkeeper to head in a third goal.
The hosts did manage a response five minutes later. A defensive slip allowed Markanday to break through; though Cooper made the initial save, Bonis tucked away the rebound. Bonis thought he had a second before the break, converting another loose ball after Cooper had denied Duffy—but the offside flag cut short his celebrations.
United wasted little time resuming control in the second half. On 52 minutes, slick interplay between Ukaki and O’Hare released Cannon, who coolly slotted home the Blades’ fourth.
Chesterfield’s Dobra had a couple of half-chances, but United remained dominant. Following a flurry of substitutions, One struck the post after an energetic run from Brooks, while Burrows twice tested the home defence from a free-kick.
The closing stages were about fitness and minutes, with few clear-cut chances. Peck curled an effort narrowly wide and Brooks missed a late opportunity, before the majority of Unitedites made their way back up the Dronfield bypass with smiles on their faces.
