Blades Cruise to Comfortable Pre-Season Win at Rotherham
Sheffield United recorded an emphatic victory in their second pre-season fixture, comfortably overcoming neighbours Rotherham United in Saturday’s friendly at the New York Stadium.
Manager Rubén Sellés again opted to rotate his squad, naming two different XI’s for each half to ensure game time across the squad.
Wearing their lilac third kit in the South Yorkshire rain, United made a bright start and dominated possession, carving out early opportunities. Ukaki’s blistering pace created a chance down the right, where his cross found Moore. The striker beat the goalkeeper, but his effort was cleared off the line before Marsh’s follow-up was blocked.
The breakthrough came in the 15th minute. ONE went on a powerful solo run, breezing past several defenders before his deflected strike wrong-footed Dawson and found the net.
ONE almost added a second minutes later, cutting in onto his left foot, but Dawson saved well at the near post. The Rotherham goalkeeper was also equal to Marsh’s effort just after the half-hour mark, following a clever dribble.
The hosts’ best chance of the first half came from a corner, when Peck’s attempted clearance ricocheted off ONE and looped onto the roof of the net.
As expected, wholesale changes were made at the interval, but United’s rhythm remained intact. Just four minutes into the second half, the Blades doubled their lead. Caceres played an incisive pass through the Millers’ defence, and CAMPBELL coolly slotted home in front of the travelling supporters.
The Blades continued to press. Seriki was denied by Dawson after good build-up play from Campbell, O’Hare, and McCallum—the latter also narrowly firing wide moments later.
The third goal arrived on 63 minutes. BROOKS, a constant threat, won the ball high up the pitch and burst down the right before finishing low under Dawson.
Rotherham briefly threatened when McWilliams blazed over from a good position, but United quickly regained control. On 72 minutes, CANNON was brought down on the edge of the box and stepped up to drill a clever free-kick to the near post, catching Dawson off guard.
More chances followed. A Robinson cross found Brooks, whose header looked destined for the net until it struck defender James square in the face. The fifth goal eventually came in the 85th minute. Brooks delivered a precise diagonal ball to Cannon, who laid it off for O’HARE to curl into the top corner.
Rotherham’s last chance fell to Nombe, but a superb last-ditch challenge from Bindon ensured a deserved clean sheet for the Blades.
