Match Report
Sellés Era Begins with Goal-Filled Friendly at York
Rubén Sellés took charge of his first match as manager on Tuesday night as Sheffield United kicked off pre-season with a 6-2 victory over York City at the LNER Community Stadium. The Spaniard opted to field two different XIs for each half, offering opportunities across the squad in an encouraging start to the summer schedule.
The Blades came flying out of the blocks with a flurry of early chances. Marsh had a free-kick saved before delivering two corners in quick succession. From the second, Seriki struck the post, but the breakthrough arrived moments later—Ahmedhodžić heading home through a crowded box on 20 minutes.
Just two minutes later, United doubled their lead. After neat link-up play between O’Hare and Seriki, Brooks finished confidently, driving a shot across the York goalkeeper.
York’s only real opportunity of the half came through Sinclair, but his strike was blocked—once again, Seriki was alert to the danger. Goalkeeper Male then produced a smart double save to deny both Seriki and Ahmedhodžić, and a further chance followed when O’Hare’s attempt was blocked and Robinson fired the rebound wide.
United were relentless and added a third before the break. In the 40th minute, O’Hare burst forward and laid the ball to Cannon, who unselfishly squared for Campbell to tap home.
The second half began much like the first, and just four minutes in, One found the net at the near post to make it 4-0. Around the hour mark, Hamer nearly added a fifth, but his well-struck free-kick was tipped onto the bar by the impressive Male.
York pulled one back in the 65th minute. Despite a foul being given against Ukaki on Banks, it was the home side who capitalised. From the resulting free-kick, Hunt curled a low strike into the corner.
Moments later, York reduced the deficit further. Davies saved well from Stones, but from the resulting corner, Fallowfield rose highest to nod in at the back post.
Sellés’ side responded quickly. On 73 minutes, Burrows delivered a pinpoint cross from the left and Moore guided his header into the bottom corner to make it 5-2.
The Blades weren’t done. As the rain set in, Ukaki won possession deep in York’s half and slipped in One, who finished coolly for his second of the night and United’s sixth on 83 minutes. Ukaki nearly added a seventh shortly after, meeting a Hamer cross but failing to convert.
Despite no further goals, United continued to press until the final whistle—something that would have pleased the new manager and the 1,420 travelling Blades fans in attendance.
