Wilder Out, Selles In

The hierarchy at Sheffield United has officially announced a mutual agreement that manager Chris Wilder will leave the football club after 18 months in charge. It will be immediately replaced by Rubén Sellés, who holds a less-than-impressive CV.

In Wilder’s second spell with the club, under his stewardship, the club was relegated from the Premier League, although the rot had already set in. After a squad overhaul last summer, the Blades missed out of automatic promotion, before losing the Play-Off Final against Sunderland.

In a farewell message, Wilder told sufc.co.uk.

“To the fans, I’m obviously disappointed to be leaving, particularly because we were so close to getting back to the Premier League. I’m a Sheffielder through and through, I love this club and this city and that feeling will never change. I depart with some cherished memories and feel proud to be talked about in the same manner that special Sheffield United managers are remembered – leading this team over 300 times will remain an incredible part of my life. This is a heartfelt thank you for all your support.”

Sellés, the 42-year-old Spaniard, is no stranger to English football, having served as manager at Southampton in 2023- initially as Assistant to Ralph Hasenhúttl, before taking charge. However, it couldn’t prevent the Saints from relegation from the Premier League.

He was appointed Reading manager in June 2023, where they narrowly avoided relegation in League One. His stay with the Royals lasted one season. His managerial career continued with Hull City, where, again, he salvaged the club from relegation at Luton’s expense on the final day.

Under Sellés, the Blades begin a new era, where they hope to achieve promotion to the Premier League next season.
