United Ease Past Wrexham to Reach Carabao Cup Second Round

Sheffield United progressed comfortably to the second round of the Carabao Cup with a well-earned victory over League One opponents Wrexham at Bramall Lane.

Despite falling behind to a Will Boyle strike, the Blades responded emphatically. Auston Trusty netted his first goal for the club before the break, and a Lewis Brunt own goal gave United the lead. Louie Marsh then grabbed his first senior goal, Anis Slimane added another, and although Seb Revan struck a late consolation for the visitors, the result was never in doubt.

Manager Chris Wilder made wholesale changes for the cup clash, naming a completely different XI from the previous outing. Summer signing Harry Souttar captained the side on his full debut in red and white.

On a balmy evening in Sheffield, it was Wrexham who threatened first. Within the opening minute, Grbić was called into action to deny Boyle. At the other end, Brewster volleyed over at the near post from a Peck corner. Soon after, Peck curled an effort over from distance and Brewster was again denied, this time by goalkeeper Burton.

Wrexham took the lead on 29 minute. A McClean cross was kept alive at the far post by Scarr, and Boyle reacted quickest, volleying past Grbić. But United hit back just six minutes later when Trusty rose to meet Peck’s deep corner, heading home to make it 1-1.

The half ended with McClean booked for a rash challenge on Peck, while Grbić was again called upon to stop Rathbone, and Revan missed the target after hesitation in the United defence.

The second half began quietly until Souttar fired narrowly wide from distance. United regained the lead on 57 minutes in fortunate fashion—Brewster latched onto a pass from Hampson, and his low cross was turned into his own net by the unfortunate Brunt.

The home side put the game beyond doubt on 69 minute. After Slimane was brought down by Bolton in the box, Brewster’s penalty was saved by Burton, but Marsh pounced on the rebound to score his first senior goal. A triple substitution followed as Wilder rotated his squad further.

Slimane added a fourth late on, finishing smartly after Souttar’s header was parried by Burton. Though Revan pulled one back in stoppage time, it was no more than a consolation on a night dominated by the Blades.
