Match Report
Sharp Sinks Forest Again as Blades Finish Pre-Season on a High
Sheffield United seized the initiative early in their final pre-season fixture at Bramall Lane, and it was a familiar face who haunted Nottingham Forest once again. Just nine minutes in, former Forest striker Billy Sharp struck for his new side. After his initial shot was parried by Paul Smith, Sharp reacted quickest, squeezing the rebound in from a tight angle to give the Blades the lead.
The home side continued to dominate proceedings, with Nick Montgomery trying his luck from distance and Kelvin Wilson making a crucial block to keep out a powerful strike. Forest began to settle after the half-hour mark, putting together a neat spell of passing that culminated in a clever through ball from Neil Lennon to Brendan Moloney. The youngster showed good composure to work space for a shot, but his effort lacked power and failed to trouble the keeper.
United quickly regained control, with summer signing Lee Hendrie slipping in Jon Stead, who curled an effort narrowly wide. Just before the break, Hendrie was again involved, linking up with Ahmed Fahti in the box, but Smith was alert to make a smart save at his near post.
The second half saw both teams struggle to find rhythm, with chances at a premium. The first real opportunity fell to Stead after a driving run from Sharp, but the striker blazed over despite having time and space.
United remained the more assertive side, though Forest nearly snatched an equaliser with nine minutes to play. Substitute Felix Bastians combined well with Kris Commons on the left, setting up Luke Chambers to deliver a cross that found Julian Bennett. The substitute rose well but sent his header over the bar.
Moments later, Forest came even closer. A corner led to another header from Bennett, this time well directed, but Blades goalkeeper Paddy Kenny reacted brilliantly, spreading himself to make the save before punching clear the rebound from Wilson. That proved to be Forest’s final chance as United held on to secure a morale-boosting win ahead of the new season.
